Collection consists of materials related to the life of Matsunosuke Ōi. The bulk of the collection is made up of Ōi's association with the Japanese Chamber of Commerce of So. CA and includes bylaws, notices, announcements, miscellaneous reports, and financial reports. There are also miscellaneous reports and other material related to the Japanese American Citizens League. Also contains personal papers of Ōi and includes manuscripts of his autobiography, correspondence related to the seizure of Ōi's properties during his wartime internment, and a scrapbook with newspaper clippings from the local press (Dec. 1941-Apr. 1942).

The Japanese American Research Project (originally named the Issei History Project) was initiated by Wakamatsu Shigeo, President of the Japanese American citizens League (JACL) in 1960.
